A rough guide over 30 years, using 2026-27 resident tax rates and Medicare levy, 3% of card limits as a monthly commitment, and minimum living costs we assume ($2,400 single, $3,600 couple, $700 per dependant). It is not a loan offer. Lenders can treat your income, bonuses and expenses differently.

What moves your borrowing power

  • The 3% buffer. Lenders test whether you could still pay at about 3 percentage points above your rate.
  • Credit limits. Reducing or closing a card you don't need can lift your result.
  • Other debts. A car loan can cut your borrowing by far more than its balance.
  • Income type. Casual, overtime and self-employed income may only be partly counted.
